Two years ago, the „Gilets Jaunes“ or in English „Yellow Vests“ have taken France by storm. It is a protest movement for economic justice which first emerged in October 2018. This movement, spanning the political spectrum and encompassing many causes, gives many people a certain sense of belonging.

The original motivation of the movement was to protest the high cost of living and rising fuel prices in France. They have since widened to become a general uprising against the policies of Emmanuel Macron who has been the President of France since 2017. At their peak, the protests have counted over 280,000 protesters across France.

More recently, the restrictions linked to the Coronavirus Pandemic have meant that the protests linked to the movement subsided, but over the past month small-scale versions of them have reprised.

The cost of fuel is something that impacts a large number of people in the country as France is a very widespread place, with many rural areas. People living in those regions rely heavily on their cars as a main mode of transport, so they felt very concerned by the cause.

The movement has been quite criticized, mainly for the methods used by some of the protesters – there have been cases of vandalism, property damage and violence linked to the movement. It is however important to point out that many of the methods used have been pacifist, such as blocking traffic or striking.

The symbolism behind the yellow high-visibility jackets that the protesters can be seen wearing is the fact that they are easily recognisable and accessible to a wide range of people. In France, the law states that all motorists must carry one of these vests in their car. Furthermore, because the movement was originally against a rise in fuel prices, it can be linked back to that.

Over time however, the supporters’ goals have become amorphous, with people generally using the movement to protest their discontent for different causes and using the emphasis and the large numbers in order to gain visibility. This makes the movement quite inclusive, englobing people from different categories of the population.

And this includes ethnic minorities such as Roma, the Roma flag having been seen at some of the protests. In January 2019, Journalists from the French news website Rue 89 interviewed one of these Roma protesters, who said the following:

“We are also here to change the way people view us. At the start, people were wary of us and thought that we were going to steal from them. Today their vision has changed, and we protest together. The yellow vests movement made that possible.”

This shows that, despite the bad press that the Yellow Vests movement has gotten at times, it has also had positive impacts on people’s lives and their place within society. This is an important perspective to take into account when reading the press, for it is important to view both sides of the matter.
