Europska unija svake godine na Dan Europe, 9. svibnja, slavi mir i jedinstvo.

Dan Europe obilježilo je Vijeće Europe 1964. godine. Kasnije mu se pridružila Europska unija, kako bi proslavljali Schumanovu deklaraciju potpisanu 9. svibnja 1950. godine. Ciljevi Schumanove deklaracije bili su snažnije ujediniti Francusku i Zapadnu Njemačku, i kasnije ostale europske države. Snage su htjeli ujediniti prema zajedničkim interesima. Datum 9. svibnja bio je, a i dalje ostaje jedan od najvažnijih dana za Europljane jer je to prvi dan slobode nakon Drugog svjetskog rata. Schumanova deklaracija bila je od povijesnog značaja jer je donesena samo 5 godina nakon kraja Drugog svjetskog rata, u kojem su nacisti okupirali Francuske i mnoge druge države. Sposobnost Roberta Schumana da se izdigne iznad mrzitelja rata i pošalje poruku o potrebi europskog jedinstva i pružanju ruke prema Njemačkoj, bila je, i još je uvijek temeljem europskog jedinstva i solidarnosti. To je bio temelj Europske unije i drugih europskih organizacija.

Taj je dan kasnije nazvan „Danom ujedinjene Europe“. Tek je 29. lipnja 1985. godine dan službeno preimenovan u Dan Europe. Vijeće Europe ovaj dan obilježava 5. svibnja.

„Ujedinjena Europa nije postignuta i vodio se rat. Europa neće biti odjednom izgrađena, ili izgrađena prema jednom planu. Bit će sagrađena konkretnim postignućima, koja u praksi izgrađuju solidarnost“.

U 2020. godini ne samo da je obilježena 70. godišnjica Schumanove deklaracije, nego se i pandemija virusa COVID-19, koji je obuhvatio cijeli svijet, nastavila širiti. Zbog tih dvaju razloga objavljena je Deklaracija 2020. u kojoj se govori o važnosti ujedinjavanja uslijed nedaća koje je svima zadao virus COVID-19. Još jedna važna stvar na koju se Deklaracija usredotočuje jest važnost obnove europskog sna i ponovno osnaživanje europskih integracija. U Deklaraciji je predloženo 9 poziva za izgradnju Unije, pozivanje na europsko partnerstvo, i prihvaćanje suverene, decentralizirane, federalne Europe. Deklaraciju 2020. uz ostale europske članove, potpisalo je i 5 hrvatskih članova.

Obilježavanje Dana Europe i pozitivan stav prema njemu u značajnom je porastu sve od osnutka Europske unije 1993. godine. Njemačka Dan Europe slavi čitav tjedan još od 1995. godine, i naziva ga „Europskim tjednom“.

Što se tiče ovogodišnjeg obilježavanja Dana Europe, u sklopu Europske godine mladih, europske institucije nastoje uključiti europsku mladež u aktivnosti. Uobičajeno je da se održavaju dani otvorenih vrata Europskog parlamenta, Europske komisije, i Europskog gospodarskog i socijalnog odbora.

Europski gospodarski i socijalni odbor 7. svibnja održao je virtualni događaj u znak sjećanja na Schumanovu deklaraciju.

Konferencija o budućnosti Europe bit će zatvorena 9. svibnja u Strasbourgu podnošenjem završnog izvješća Izvršnog odbora. Konferencija se održala kako bi se razgovaralo s građanima Europe o idejama kako bi se EU trebala suočiti sa svojim izazovima i mogućnostima.

Europsko vijeće Europske unije otvara izložbu posvećenu Danu Europe u zgradi Justus Lipsius u Bruxellesu. Posjetitelji će moći istražiti štandove, interaktivne igre i informativni sadržaj. Osim toga, moći će rezervirati online sjednicu kako bi sa stručnjacima razgovarali o radu Europskog vijeća i Vijeća Europske unije. Europsko vijeće organizirat će i niz drugih interaktivnih aktivnosti uživo i online.

Dan Europe slavi mir i jedinstvo u Europi. Dobra je to prilika da se osvrnemo na promjene kroz koje su prošle zemlje članice, a i predvidimo i isplaniramo smjerove u kojima bi europske zajednice trebale ići. Sada, u razdoblju rata u Europi, potrebni su nam vizionari poput Roberta Schumana. Nadamo se da će se Europa vratiti miru.

Peace and unity is celebrated during Europe Day every year on 9th of May by the European Union.

The Europe Day was first introduced in 1964 by the Council of Europe. Later it was joined by the European Union to celebrate the Schuman Declaration that was signed on the 9th of May 1950. The goal of the Schuman Declaration was to better unite France and West Germany, and other European countries later, by joining forces towards common interests. The date of the 9th of May was and still remains important for people in Europe because it was the first day of freedom abter the World War II. Schuman Declaration was of historic importance because it came only 5 years after the end of the WW II in which Nazi Germany occupied France among many other countries. The ability of Robert Schumanto raise above hatereds of the war and send a message about the need of European Unity and extending hand towards Germany was and still is the base of European Unity and Solidarity. It was the fundament of European Union and other European organizations.

This day was later known to be called the “Day of the United Europe”. It was only on the 29th of June 1985 that the European Communities decided to turn the day officially into a “Europe Day”.  The Council of Europe celebrates this day on the 5th of May.

2020 marked not only the 70th Anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, but also the continuation of the spread of COVID-19 infection that affected the whole world dramatically. Due to these two reasons a Declaration 2020 was published that spoke about the importance of uniting together during the hardships of COVID-19. Another vital thing that the Declaration focused on is the importance of revitalizing the European dream and re-invigorating European integration. On this matter the Declaration proposed 9 calls for building the Union, invoke European partnerships, and embrace a sovereign, decentralized, federal Europe. Among other European members, 5 Croatian members signed the Declaration of 2020.

The celebration and the attitude towards the European Day has been growing significantly ever sice we had European Union is 1993. In particular Germany has been celebrating this day for a whole week since 1995, calling it a “Europe Week”.

As for the 2022 celebrations of the Europe Day, as part of the European Youth Year, European Institutions aim to engage European youth in related activities. It is common to hold open doors in the European Parliament, the European Commission and the European Economic and Social Committee among others during this day.

On the 7th of May a virtual event will be held by the European Economic and Social Committee to commemorate the Schuman Declaration. 

On the 9th of May in Strasbourg the Future of Europe conference will be closed by delivering the final report by the Executive board. The conference was created to gather and discuss with the citizens of Europe the ideas on how the EU should address its challenges and opportunities.

The European Council of the European Union opens an exhibition dedicated to Europe Day in the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels. The visitors will explore dedicated stands, interactive games, and informative content. Other than that, you can book an online session to discuss the work of the European Council and the Council of the European Union with the experts. A variety of other interactive activities both live and online will be hosted by the European Council.

The Day of Europe celebrates peace and unity in Europe. It is a good opportunity to reflect on these days on the changes European Member States went through and overlook and plan the directions European communities should go to. Now in the time of war in Europe visioners like Robert Schuman are needed and we hope that Europe will return back to peace.
